Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool for managing tracking codes and pixels on your website without editing the source code every time. Once it is installed, you control all tags from one interface.

Tags, triggers and variables

  • Tags: the code snippets that run, such as GA4, Google Ads conversion tracking or the Meta Pixel
  • Triggers: the conditions that fire a tag, such as a page view or a form submission
  • Variables: values such as the URL, click text or order value that tags and triggers use

What is GTM used for?

  • Measuring conversions such as enquiries, calls and purchases
  • Tracking events such as scroll depth, downloads or video views
  • Loading tags only after consent, together with Consent Mode v2
  • Building server-side tracking with a server container

Benefits

Changes go live faster, every version is saved and can be rolled back, and preview mode shows whether everything fires correctly before you publish.
