What llms.txt is and how it differs from robots.txt
llms.txt is a simple text file in the root folder of your website, much like robots.txt. It briefly introduces your company to AI assistants and tools built on language models and points them to your most important pages, so they do not have to guess what matters on your site.

To be honest: llms.txt is still a proposed standard from 2024, not a requirement. Not every AI assistant reads it today, and on its own it does not guarantee you will be quoted. But it takes a few minutes to create and makes it easier for AI tools to find their way around your site. The Yoast SEO plugin supports it too. How to upload the file to your website
- Upload it to the root folder. llms.txt belongs in the main folder of your website, where robots.txt is. Usually via FTP or your hosting file manager.
- Check the URL. Once uploaded, it must open at your domain followed by /llms.txt, for example mycompany.com/llms.txt.
- WordPress with Yoast SEO. Yoast can create llms.txt automatically. If you want to use your own file from the generator, switch off the automatic feature in Yoast SEO.
- Hosted platforms. On Shopify, Wix or Squarespace you often cannot upload a file to the root folder directly. Ask the platform support or get in touch with us.
- Keep it up to date. When you add new services or important pages, generate the file again.

Is the llms.txt generator free?
Yes. The generator is free and needs no sign-up. You can edit, download and use the file without any limits.
Where does the generator get the text from?
Only from your website. The company name and description come from your homepage and its meta description, the links from your main menu and sitemap, and the page descriptions from their meta descriptions. It does not make anything up, so good titles and meta descriptions pay off.
Will llms.txt make ChatGPT recommend me?
No. llms.txt is still a proposed standard and not every AI assistant reads it. Recommendations depend mainly on your content, structured data, reviews and mentions of your company on other websites. llms.txt is a cheap extra that helps AI find its way around your site.
What if I already have an llms.txt file?
The generator finds it and shows it next to the new draft. Compare them and keep the best of both. If the Yoast SEO plugin creates the file, switch off its llms.txt feature before uploading your own.
I use Yoast SEO. Do I need the generator?
Yoast SEO can create llms.txt automatically. Our generator helps when you want full control over the file, for example to add a company description and contact details or to include only your key pages.
Why did the generator skip some pages?
We skip technical pages such as the basket, login or search, pages with noindex, URLs blocked in robots.txt, broken links and other language versions. You can see the list of skipped URLs in the file check.
Do you store the websites I enter?
We keep the draft for 30 minutes so we do not have to build it again if you enter the same site. We never publish drafts and we do not need your email or a sign-up.
