Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to measure the user experience of a page: how fast it loads, how quickly it responds and how stable it stays while loading. They are part of the page experience signals used in ranking.
The three metrics
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): when the largest visible element has loaded, good means 2.5 seconds or less
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to clicks and input, good means 200 milliseconds or less
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much content moves while loading, good means 0.1 or less
Google looks at the values reached by 75 percent of real visits, separately for mobile and desktop.
Measuring
PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console show real user data. Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools provide lab data.
Typical improvements
- Compress images, serve WebP or AVIF and set their dimensions
- Load fonts and critical CSS early
- Reduce JavaScript and defer it
- Caching and fast hosting
- Reserved space for banners, ads and embeds
