Google AI Mode is a separate search view in which Google answers questions in depth with AI and lets users ask follow-up questions in a conversation. Instead of ten blue links, users get one connected answer with linked sources. Google introduced AI Mode in 2025 and has been rolling it out to more countries and languages.

How does AI Mode work?

A complex question is broken down into many sub-questions, which Google searches in parallel (a technique called query fan-out). The results are combined into a structured answer. Users can follow up, upload images or ask by voice.

AI Mode vs. AI Overviews

AI Overviews are short summaries above the normal search results. AI Mode is a dedicated area that users open on purpose, and it gives longer, conversational answers. Both rely on Google’s index and cite websites as sources.

What does it mean for businesses?

  • Visibility comes from being cited in the answer, not only from rankings
  • Content needs to cover the many sub-questions of a topic
  • Brand, reviews and a well maintained Google Business Profile carry more weight
  • Classic SEO remains the foundation, because AI Mode draws on indexed pages
