Performance Max (PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type that serves ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, the Display Network, Discover, Gmail and Google Maps from a single campaign. Google’s algorithm decides on bids, placements and ad combinations.

How does Performance Max work?

You provide the goals, the budget and the building blocks: headlines, images, videos, the product feed from Merchant Center and audience signals. Google assembles ads from them and optimizes for conversions or conversion value, using a target CPA or a target ROAS.

Who is PMax for?

  • Online stores with a well maintained product feed
  • Businesses whose conversions are measured reliably
  • Accounts with enough data and budget for the algorithm to learn

What to get right

  • Clean conversion tracking including Consent Mode v2, because the AI only optimizes for what it can measure
  • Strong assets in every format, otherwise Google generates its own
  • Brand exclusions if brand terms run in a separate campaign
  • Regular reviews of search term and channel reports

Performance Max is not a strategy on its own. Digitalman combines PMax with Search campaigns and clean tracking. Learn more on our Google Ads agency page.
